On Monday 8th December the school was fortunate to receive a visit from David Dein, Football Entrepreneur and businessman.
David Dein joined the board of Arsenal F.C. in 1983 and was made Vice Chairman in the same year. He rose to Vice Chairman of the Football Association and has served on numerous UEFA and FIFA Committees also leading the England bid for the 2018 World Cup.
David was also President of the Arsenal Ladies Team which has consistently been the best.
He was the man who brought Arsene Wenger to Arsenal in 1996 and during David’s reign the club won:
· The League five times
· The F.A. Cup five times
· The UEFA Cup Winners Cup
· The League Cup twice
· The Community Shield five times
A total of eighteen trophies!
In addition Arsenal now has the finest training facilities and the most magnificent stadium, The Emirates.
David Dein addressed Year 10 and Year 11 pupils giving a truly inspirational talk in which he explained how he was one of the main architects in the creation of the Premier League in 1992 and has been at the forefront of many important campaigns. These campaigns have resulted in the introduction changes in football including the use of vanishing spray to stop encroachment at free kicks and the introduction of Goal Line Technology. He also spoke with passion about the introduction of Independent Time Keeping, taking the responsibility for timekeeping away from referees.
The pupils could take away many messages from David Dein’s address including “you don’t get anywhere in life unless you stick your neck out”, but the most important message for life was, “always do your best and have pride in what you do.”
We are grateful to Speakers4Schools, an independent UK charity launched in 2011 which provides state secondary schools with talks from a range of industry leading professionals and academics, free of charge. Over two thousand schools have applied to date. The charity was founded by Robert Peston.
